Cerebral Projection

She looked at the vortex stretching out before her, the Gateway of light crackled, pulsating and scattering splintered shadows everywhere. Thousands of multicoloured trails spiralled their way deep into the vortex’s centre. At the other end was High Street Kensington of 1935, dim and distant. Enticing.

Erica took a cautious step into the dark portal. Soundless wind buffeted her on all sides. She continued forwards. The floor was solid underfoot, despite looking like a murky winter’s night. Mist swirled amidst the light trails in a corkscrew along the sides of the vortex all the way to the portal’s end. On all sides, a fleeting, scratchy haze of images whizzed by her; swirling until she didn’t know which way was up or down. People walked past with their shopping, schoolchildren, mothers pushing pushchairs; then, costumes changed, and hairstyles too, as well as the shop facades, with neon signs and Christmas lights giving way to printed signage and old-fashioned streetlamps. Erica could see governess’ walking with their charges and nannies pushing smart perambulators. Modern day cars gave way to vintage motorcars as the years sped by; people walked to and fro, their fashions changing constantly, as did the people: accidents, lovers, arguments, crying, laughing, screaming. She watched the constant flow of history whizz by with each step. Her head spun. It was like watching decades of footage on hyper-rewind. Her breath came in ragged short gasps: it took all her effort to focus on the end of the vortex and keep walking forwards. Michael appeared at her side.

“You don’t see it? The history? The people?” Her voice was strained even to her ears.

He shook his head and, seeing her struggle, took her by the elbow and steadied her as she laboured on.

By the time they took their final step out into 1935, she felt mentally exhausted. Her knees quivered, and she stood shaking, catching her breath. “Well, that was an experience.” She laughed weakly.

“I can only assume it’s because you’re a Medium that you—” Michael stopped abruptly. “Erica!” He sounded shocked, even alarmed. She turned to find him reaching for her face. “Your burns!”

She felt her cheeks and neck and realised there was no discomfort: no tautness nor blistering. Her burns had gone.

“Time heals all wounds...”
